![]() ![]() ![]() As a result, there is not too much of a learning curve for the basics of the game. You have the simple controls of walking around, jumping, and firing the weapons that you get. The mechanics of the game are rather straightforward, which is refreshing for a game market stuffed with complex titles. Little did I know that this game would get me hooked with its gameplay, artistic style, and many other elements that set it apart from the rest of the games coming out these days! Let’s break this game down one thing at a time! However, when I heard that Illfonic was making a third-person platform shooter, I decided that this was something worth taking a test spin on. I did find that the objectives got a little repetitive throughout the runs and story-wise the game was lacking but besides that, I really can’t complain about anything.Īrcadegeddon will be available to PlayStation Plus members until Monday, August 1.Illfonic was already on my list of developers to look out for considering that they are working on Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, which is an asymmetrical horror game (aka my favorite genre). Visually the game looks very polished, the gunplay feels very good and responsive, and customization allows you to easily distinguish yourself from other players. Both solo and multiplayer modes were lots of fun as solo you can try and make it up the leaderboards and the multiplayer modes can turn into frantic fun with friends, especially with all the wacky colors and guns.įrom my experience I have to say I was really happy with this game, the steady progression makes playing feel rewarding, and being able to earn currency from both game modes makes both modes justifiable to play. One complaint about the weapons is that some of them feel very underwhelming, this isn’t really a problem in Solo modes but in group modes, the guns are few and far between and the Shotguns almost feel like BB guns. Biomes will be filled with hostile enemies, bosses, and loot boxes and each biome will have an objective that will be required to complete in order to move on.Įvery time you advance to the next biome your difficulty will increase and that’s all that this game has to offer. All weapons and upgrades found during your run will be lost upon death and additional starter weapons can be unlocked if you loot weapons and use them often. Dying during your run will end your adventure and send you back into the arcade. Once in Arcadegeddon you will load into a biome with your selection of abilities and weapons and begin the run. These challenges are usually pretty simple like killing a certain amount of enemies, getting long-range kills, and so on. All this can be done at the expense of an in-game currency earned by completing challenges or by normal gameplay. Character customization is more than just cosmetics, you have several abilities and weapons to unlock that will slowly allow you to become stronger. When it comes to gameplay the local arcade is under attack from a virus placed by an evil corporation that is trying to hurt the arcade and the gameplay feels very similar to Fortnite with the wacky colors and characters.Īfter playing through a lengthy tutorial that explains this you will then have the option to customize your character and jump into both modes. Both the PVP and Arcadegeddon mode can be played with up to 4 players online and supports crossplay. If you die you will have to start over and this mode can be played solo offline if needed. ![]()

For non-load bearing walls, this will not affect the structural integrity of the home. If the spacing is increased to 24” on center, the number of studs can be reduced to 5. For example, an 8’ long section of wall with 16” on center spacing will require 7 studs. The reason many interior non-load bearing walls increase the spacing to 24” on center is that it reduces the amount of wood needed. Most interior partition walls use 24” on center studs. Most site-built homes also use 16” on center studs in the outer walls and interior load-bearing walls. Most site-built homes today are also built with wood-framed wall systems with 2”x4” or 2”圆” used the vast majority. Shear forces they to move the wall from the rectangle the wall was meant to be and move it to a parallelogram.īuilding codes, whether local for site-built homes, or to HUD standard for manufactured homes, require that walls be built strongly enough to withstand these forces. Also, strong wind and gusts will apply shear forces on walls. The additional weight of snow will compound the compression on these walls. The weight of your roof causes compression loads to be placed on a load-bearing wall in your home. Manufactured homes are almost always built with wood-framed wall systems. The strength of any wall is dependent not only on the materials used but also the construction methods used to build it. Many newer homes now have at least R-30 ceiling insulation values and some have options for R-38 to R-50. Many of these older homes have R-values in the R-10 to R-15 range. There was not much space to install a high R-value insulation product. In older mobile homes, the amount of space between ceiling and roof was very narrow along the side walls. This is because of the limited amount of space between the ceiling below and the roof above. There is not usually any attic access in manufactured homes. Keep in mind that the higher the R-value, the more space is needed to install it. For most climates, R-30 to R-40 is recommended for attic insulation. Whether to keep out the cold or the heat, roof insulation is of utmost importance. The following table gives the R-values possible with 2”x4” and 2”圆” exterior wall studs: You would have difficulty in properly insulating a home in cold climates with exterior walls that are framed with studs smaller than 2”x4” studs. Keep in mind that older mobile homes (pre-HUD) often have exterior wall studs that are 2”x3” or even smaller in some cases. The weather zone you live in will dictate the amount of wall insulation you need for a properly insulated wall. This all depends upon the type of stud used for your wall framing. The amount of insulation your walls can hold when done properly will determine the overall R-value rating your walls will support. In reverse, a thinner the wall will have fewer dead air pockets. The thicker the wall, the more tiny pocket the insulation can hold. Insulation works by trapping dead air within tiny pockets inside the insulation. ![]() So what does this have to do with the size of the studs? Installing RetroArch and DOSBox Pure on Windows 10Īlthough RetroArch offers to run itself automatically once the installer finishes, we found it frequently doesn't actually pop up despite ticking that box. None of this is made clear anywhere in DOSBox Pure's rather sparse documentation, which assumes you're a past master with RetroArch specifically and MS-DOS game-emulator environments in general. RetroArch, in its own words, is "a frontend for emulators, game engines, and media players." DOSBox Pure is a "core" for RetroArch-meaning, when properly installed, it serves as one of the engines that RetroArch can use to run an older game. The very first thing you'll need to know is that DOSBox Pure itself runs underneath the broader RetroArch application. Although DOSBox Pure is specifically trying to alleviate that, it falls afoul of the same nest of expectations of what "everybody already knows," and I found it rather frustrating digging all the way to the bottom of "what is and how can I make it work." Down into the underpass below busy Ote-Dori toward city hall, drawn as if through osmosis into the rushing suction of cicada chatter that announced Hamamatsu Castle Park. My dad grew up in Hamamatsu, a city midway between Tokyo and Kyoto, in Shizuoka Prefecture-a wet, green land that sprawls out, a spreading of hands, from the inland mountains along the curling tail of the Tenryū-gawa toward the sea. I only knew I recognized the brush from my childhood and needed it. Here, I could go into how the Kamenoko Tawashi has been crafted, not manufactured, since 1907, how, according to the brand’s website, the husks are soaked for four to six weeks before being separated into fibers, which are then coiled in a “delicate process that can only be done by hand.” But I knew nothing of this when I bought my first at a well-curated, Japanese-expat-owned home-goods shop, aptly named Tortoise General Store, in Venice Beach four years ago. After many months, it begins to emit a faint metallic, scrambled-egg-like funk, the bristles develop permanent bedhead, and I know it’s due for a swap. One brush takes ages to become gunky or gross. They may as well be the same, like the beloved dog that dies only to be replaced by an identical dog. Since I bought my first Kamenoko Tawashi in 2016, I’ve owned only three or four. “Yes, says Manhattan’s Museum of Modern Art, if it is designed both for usefulness and good looks.”) (“Is there art in a broomstick?” wrote Time in 1953. With the right curator, the tawashi might have been featured in MoMA’s Good Design shows of the midcentury, the ones that canonized the balloon whisk, the Lexikon 80 typewriter, and the Slinky. ![]() I think it resembles not a turtle but a woodland creature you’d best not touch, a hedgehog maybe, curled in sleep. The ends are secured into a loop about the size of a nickel, useful for hanging on a hook. The brush is most commonly formed by twisting palm-husk bristles around a stiff wire, which is doubled back to form a bushy U. The Kamenoko Tawashi name refers to the brush’s specific shape, said to evoke a baby turtle-though I would never have said so were it not for that drawing I didn’t know until now, when I googled it, that kamenoko means “baby turtle” in Japanese. A sweet illustration is ringed in red at the package’s center-a turtle with its head craned back, as if the animal had just been surprised from behind. This one comes in a package that resembles a small, cheddar-colored bag of chips, about the length and width of an adult hand with the thumb folded in. A tawashi is any brush of stiff natural fiber used for washing, usually dishes and pans. ![]() It’s a tawashi, specifically the Kamenoko Tawashi from Nishio-Shouten Co., Ltd., made in Japan. ![]() ![]() ![]() The same happens when running – if a projectile hits you you are thrown back, typically into another trap. There’s nothing more annoying than taking a leap of faith, and an enemy appearing in mid-jump who immediately recoils in horror, forcing you to go backwards, usually into a spike pit or oblivion. The first is one of my pet hates in games of this type – the exaggerated knock back that occurs if you take a hit. Of course, there are issues with Cyber Shadow, but only really a couple of note. ![]() Luckily, as I mentioned a little earlier, the controls are sharp enough to allow you to chain together jumps, dashes and slides into an almost balletic dance through the enemies. ![]() Luckily, there are shrine-looking things that act as checkpoints, although not quite as many as you’d like. Small passages with spikes, platforms that seem to be just out of reach and perilous pathways to traverse will take their toll on you as much as the enemies do. With many more powers to obtain, including a double jump, parries, dashes and wall slides, you’ll soon be an absolute badass.Īnd it’s just as well, as not only is the path ahead full of enemies and bosses to dispose of, the actual design of the levels is also out to get you. You can only have a certain amount of throws as well, controlled by how many power points you currently have. The first one, for instance, gives the ability to throw shurikens, which can either be used as ranged weapons or to trigger switches from a distance. The ninjas we pull from these pods are in too rough a shape to live, but before expiring they bestow upon us some new abilities. Sound-wise it is all bang on as well swishes with a sword, shurikens and a pulse-pounding retro soundtrack by Enrique Martin.Īt the end of each level, there tends to be a pod, similar to the one that we were encased in at the start of the game. The animation appears to be period correct too, and the controls are absolutely pin-sharp so any deaths (and there will be some, make no mistake) will be entirely your fault. In fact, the design of the enemies and backgrounds are all beautifully realised. You see, the good parts are very good indeed, with a beautiful hand-drawn look to the sprites, and backgrounds that scroll in a mesmerising parallax style – the best I’ve seen since my days with the SNES. Only we survive, and so the scene is set for a massive ruck with revenge at its heart.Ĭyber Shadow transported me straight back to the glory days of side-scrolling platformers as a love letter to the games of olden times, both for good and for bad. Now, I have to be honest, the story here is more kind of hinted at than spoon-fed, but it would appear that the chief baddy – Dr Progen – has used the souls of the ninja to power his evil army, exterminating all life forms on the planet. As the game opens, we find ourselves hibernating in some kind of pod, awakened by our faithful robot buddy, who goes by the designation L-Gion he is our only guide through what remains of Mekacity. We are in rough shape, and seemingly made up of more than a few cybernetic upgrades. The world has been taken over by synthetic lifeforms, and we are Shadow, the sole survivor of our whole clan of ninjas. The story of Cyber Shadow is suitably bonkers, seemingly coming straight from one of the more believable video game nasties of the 1980s. ![]() |
